Web Design Sheffield

Web Design Sheffield appears to be the top search term for people looking for a Web Design company in Sheffield.  You might not think that's unusual (and according to the search statistics it isn't!), but it highlights the vagaries and confusions that can arise from trying to identify the search terms people will use to find your business,

You might think that "Web Designers in Sheffield" is a more natural search term than "Web Design Sheffield", but last month, 2,900 searches were made for "Web Design Sheffield" and only 73 searches were made for the more natural "Web Designers in Sheffield".

This highlights the importance of making sure your keyword research is thorough.  If you're optimising for phrases which are only being used occassionally, then it stands to reason that you're not going to get much traffic from them.

More Fasthosts Email Problems
I closed down one of our Fasthosts accounts last Wednesday.  The lady on the phone asked me why and I explained it was mostly to do with the email problems they had burdened us all with.  She explained that they now had a brand new email platform and I expect that was supposed to fill me with confidence so I would not cancel the account and transfer the 60+ domains that were on that account back in.  I cancelled anyway.

We still have 170+ domains on another Fasthosts account though, and guess what happened the very next morning?  Yes, their email platform failed again and our phones lit up. So much for the new platform eh? Fortunately our customers seem to have the patience of Job even though some of them rely heavilly on it for their business.

We are now working our way through getting the other domains away from them as fast as we can, but their control panel software (which they wrote themselves) keeps failing with system errors.  We were also billed for a domain renewal the other day, not an unusual occurance, except that the domain was nothing to do with us!

Our advice?  Avoid Fasthosts!!

How Time Flies!!
Is it really almost 3 months since we last posted any news??  Well it's all happening down here.  We have never been so busy.  Another big (national) customer on board with specialist requirements relating to writing on pdf documents from form data entry, and several other websites we've sent live - which we MUST get round to adding on to our portfolio! Watch this space for news on our new big customer - and some great new shopping cart developments like reviews and so on.

WEB EQUIP ARE NUMBER ONE ON GOOGLE!
Type Web Designers in Sheffield into Google and you'll see us at the top of the listings.

It's particularly difficult for a web designer to get to number 1 because every other web designer is trying to get to the top as well, so it's a bit like winning a gold medal.

This is absolute proof that we know what we're doing when it comes to search engine optimisation.  Visit our page on search engine optimisation which details some of the pitfalls as well as describing what it's all about.

Domain Transfers in and Transfers Out
All web developers who look after the hosting of the websites they have developed (like us) often deal with requests for domain transfers, so they have domain names coming in and out of their control.  Obviously it's better to have more domains coming in than going out, and because of the record number of domains being transferred in to us at the moment we seem to have become experts in domain transfers!

Domain name transfers to and from Web Equip Ltd over the last 3 years:

DOMAINS TRANSFERRED OUT:  2

DOMAINS TRANSFERRED IN:
67

Why were two domains transferred out?  We transferred them out and closed the customer account because they had seriously breached our terms and conditions.

Why were 67 domains transferred in?  Mostly because we could provide a solution to a problem the customer was experiencing at the time either because of email problems or website functionality. And sometimes because the customer had realised s/he was being significantly overcharged.

WEB EQUIP CREATES DOT COM STUDIOS LTD AND MOVES NEXT DOOR
We have established a new company with our web design partners Phorm Design.  It's called Dot Com Studios Ltd and is merely a vehicle for processing revenues from the shopping cart and other "packaged" type products.  It does not replace Web Equip Ltd and existing customers will see no difference at all.

In addition,  we are moving into a double unit this weekend.  We now have a great meeting area and more room for the servers and the drums of course.  The bulk of the work has been done today and we were offline for about an hour but we quickly settled and we're now looking forward to swinging a few cats around.

THREE New Online Shops to Launch This Week
Three online shops to launch this week with a cumulative total of almost 12,000 products going online.

They are, Creative Home Lighting (Doncater), Tackle2Fish and Hunter Enterprise.  Their sectors couldn't be more diverse could they? A lighting retailer, a fishing tackle shop and a hand tools retailer.

Not only that, but two more just came in, Within Reason (a funky goods retailer in Sheffield), and SFL Group Ltd (a machine knives manufacturer also in Sheffield - where else??)

MAF Properties Take Full Student Accommodation SEO Package
If there's one business sector which is more difficult to optimise than web design, it's probably the property rental market.  There are some big guys with big budgets at the top, and since Google has this fixation with link popularity they are mostly directory sites, so it's not going to be easy.

And we quite like the occassional challenge (only occassionally mind!) so lets go for it!  And let's start right here.. MAF Properties are agents for quality student accommodation in Sheffield providing all kinds of properties to let for students and professionals.

Another Website Ripoff Discovered
We have met with an organisation today who are being charged.. wait for it.. £600 per month for a content management website, and if that isn't bad enough, they can't get into the site to manage their content!!

For a content management website, we would need to recruit 60 new customers to generate that much income, sixty!  We can't think what on earth they could be doing for the customer to justify fees of that magnitude.  You could virtually employ somebody full-time for that!

Should we increase our fees by a power of ten and work out of swanky London offices, or stay as we are in our cosy office units down Neepsend?  I think we'll stay as we are thank you.

Another Website Using US based Hosting
On our website hosting page we talk about the importance of avoiding cheap hosting in the USA because we have seen the terrible effects it has on website performance.

Today, whilst sat with a customer, we discovered another one. We would publish the URL here but we're not sure about the ethics.. If you contact us we'll give you the URL as a perfect example of why you need to ignore the +/- £4 a month saving.  It really isn't worth it.  Search engine bots wont like it one little bit, and neither will your potential customers, they'll go back to the next one on the list faster than you can say "I might have lost a sale there"!

New Website Launched
This has not been easy.  No really.  It has taken a very, very long time because we've been seriously busy for at least the last 18 months, and as you'll notice if you fish around it still isn't finished even now.

One of the worst things you can do with a website is put it live when it isn't finished.  We wouldn't advise a customer to do it (messes up the SEO and looks bad to visitors), but we did it because...

A) Knowing our website is online and unfinished might enable us to squeeze a few more hours out of somewhere to get it finished, at least to a point where we can start tweaking. Where these hours are going to come from we don't know yet!

B) And to be honest it doesn't matter too much at the moment if it puts the occasional new business enquiry off, we're struggling to meet demand at the moment and should probably take another developer on - we don't even seem to have time for that!

New Print Equipment Arrives
We have made a big investment in some new equipment which allows us to handle much bigger jobs. I should get Haydn to write this because apart from folding paper I haven't got a clue what it all does.  All I know is that we all nearly broke our backs getting it into the units, and one of them has it's own generator?!?!

-- edit --
I am informed that when it comes to print I am an idiot (I can't deny it, it also applies to curtains and DIY) and that the picture is actually of a poster/banner printer.  The folding thing is in the other unit with the thing that has it's own engine... ??!!

Web Obfuscator Installed
After weeks of anticipation, the Web Obfuscator has finally been installed.  Until you fully understand what it does, it can be very confusing.  The obfuscator is VERY busy 24 hours a day, but it's no good just asking a few quick questions about what it does, the Obfuscator is a prime example of a little knowledge being a dangerous thing.

It currently sits on top of the Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) for the servers.  It's happy there.  To fully understand it, you will need to be a geek who is prepared to take our Managing Director for a pint or four.

Why all News is Good News

If you put an updateable news facility on your website, you are doing your business, your customers, your potential customers and your website a great favour because if you're careful about it, you can do wonders for your sites generic search engine listings.

Even if you're not careful about it, just writing as much news as you can not only benefits your customers (and potential customers), but it is going to be relevant content, and unique, and search engines absolutely love that to bits.
