We're not a large agency by any stretch of the imagination, but you'll be pleased to know that we do everything in-house here with our own staff. In fact we don't really like the term agency because it implies we find people to do things according to the requirement (as in recruitment agency etc).

When people are looking for someone to produce a new website for them they invariably search for "web designers", but web design simply determines what the website will look like, it's the web developers who actually build the website and make it do the things you want it to do. So whilst web design is clearly important because it establishes the look and feel and navigation of the website, it's just a series of pictures until the web developers get their hands on it.

It's an important distinction because some web designers will design your website and then ship it out to developers to build it and when that happens there's the potential for miscommunication. Here at Web Equip the Web Developer building your website sits about 3m away from the Designer who designed it.

Technologies Used

If you care about the nitty gritty of how we build your website, this is for you. The client-side technologies we use are pretty much the same as everybody else uses e.g. XHTML, CSS, JavaScript, Ajax, and XML. But for server-side scripting we have predominantly used Classic ASP on Microsoft Windows Servers to date but we now have PHP expertise and are looking to move to ASP.NET.

There is an issue here with server-side scripting. PHP is the most widely used language and support for Classic ASP is on the decline as Microsoft want developers to use ASP.NET. We don't like ASP.NET at the moment because like most Microsoft offerings it is far too complex and as a result it's unstable because many different things of the right version need to be in place before the code will compile and run. So the overheads in getting a small to medium sized website to look great and run smoothly in ASP.NET are too great for a small development operation.

That leaves PHP, which our MD detests because he says "it's all brackets and semi-colons and meaningless jibberish", he's even written an article called Classic ASP Vs PHP. Nevertheless, needs must, and we are committed to moving forward with proven technology, so..

We can now develop as much PHP as we can Classic ASP.

ASP.NET will have to wait until it, and us, are ready.

Some Of The Things We Have Developed

Online Simulator Booking System
A golf bar installed 4 golf simulators and needed a method of allowing anyone to book and pay for a simulator slot on their website. Their in-house staff also needed access in order to carry out bookings for customers coming in to the bar. The system was a great success and allowed for one or more simulators to be reserved for special purposes, block bookings of 1 or more simulators for party bookings and so on.

Sales Order Processing Integration
We developed a system which would take online payments through WorldPay and then populate the customers in-house order processing database. This meant that the customer could use their own familiar order processing and dispatch system without having to go online and do any downloads etc. Depending on the type of order, the first indication that an order had been received would be when the picking note was produced in dispatch.

Integrated Shopping Cart
We wrote our own shopping cart from scratch. Why? Because those 'off-the-shelf' shopping carts didn't do what we wanted them to do, and they were overly complicated for customers to do some of the simplest things. So, 7 years later we have a shopping cart which can not only do what you want it to do, but it's very simple to administer.

Membership Systems, News, Blogging, Property Management etc.,
We have designed and written many membership systems, news and blogging systems, and online portfolio management systems for properties and various gallery projects. We don't just tweak a WordPress template! And you don't have to spend hours learning how to use your website, because it's built specifically for you, it's simplicity itself!
